Riverina Eastern Regional Organisations of Council (REROC) are encouraging the future generation to REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE as they send out over 1600 Kindy Kit library bags to kindergarten students across the region.
In the Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council (CGRC) local government area (LGA) schools participating in the initiative included:
Sacred Heart Central School Cootamundra Public School E A Southee Public School
Wallendbeen Public School Stockinbingal Public School Gundagai Public School
St Patricks Primary School Gundagai South Public School
The Kindy Kits library bags contain special little goodies, with bookmarks, colouring in cartoons featuring Recycle Roo and the Compost Doctor aimed at promoting class discussions on waste avoidance, resource recovery and promoting the reduce, reuse, recycle message. Pamphlets are included to show what items should be disposed of in green, red, and yellow bins.
REROC initiated the Kindy Kits library bags in 2006 to promote and educate youngsters on the importance of reducing rubbish to landfill, recycling and to reuse where possible. The kits are a welcoming gift for kindergarten students and this project aims to reduce waste and improve resource recovery.
CGRC mayor Cr Charlie Sheahan is thrilled and excited to see the Kindy Kit library bags go out again this year.
“This initiative is so important because not only does it teach the younger generation to reduce, re-use and recycle, they are also a practical resource that children can use on a daily basis, with a fun re-useable bag to carry their library books,” Cr Sheahan said.
The REROC Waste Forum was established in 1997 to promote co-operation between REROC member councils in relation to waste management. Since that time, it has expanded beyond waste management issues to encompass a wide variety of environmental issues and has been responsible for initiating a number of diverse projects. The Kindy Kits are designed to promote conversation at home and at school on ways to reduce waste and manage recycling at home and at school.
