Cootamundra’s Pioneer Park has now progressed beyond a nature and hiking walk for those fit enough to cover the distance. Over the last 18 months the popular nature reserve has undergone two upgrades that will open the park up to camping visitors, and local alike.
The park is renowned for its native flora and fauna, featuring Yellow Box woodland and is home to a variety of native animals including kangaroos, echidnas, and kookaburra along with other bird species that delight bird watchers.
The improvements and infrastructure were a collaboration between Council and representatives from the Friends of Pioneer Park where the scope of works for the project and items to be included were discussed and agreed on.
Funding in excess of $370,000 has been expended to:
- Upgrade the access road and car park.
- Improve drainage.
- Sealing the gravel road.
- Car park line marking.
- The installation of a toilet facility.
- Two picnic benches with solar bollards.
- A double gas BBQ with a covered awning.
- Two Bins and surrounds.
- 2 fire BBQ’s
- Bollards and chains.
- Planting native species.
- 2 bench seats on the two look out areas.
- Trail map signage.
- New Park signage.
- Coloured markers for the walking/cycling tracks.
- Walking/cycling track repair work.
The funding included $165K through Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Round 2 and
$212K funded through the NSW Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund.
Park benches have recently been installed on the walking track giving hikers a million-dollar view over Cootamundra. These will be a welcome respite for the new visitors expected to use the park, now it is recognised as an RV Friendly site.
