Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council will lead a coordination relief effort to assist with recovery for residents who were impacted by the flooding event at Cootamundra on Monday 31 October 2022.
Council will work with the SES and BlazeAid to help with the recovery and clean-up of homes affected in the flooding event in Cootamundra, Stockinbingal, and Wallendbeen. Other government agencies such as Resilience NSW and Department of Community and Justice along with charity organisations are also working on relief efforts.
Over 100 homes were inundated with flood waters, that raged down Muttama Creek after a heavy storm on Monday afternoon dumped over 50ml of rain in the area, causing a flash flood. The waters rose quickly with residents in low lying areas around Muttama Creek in Cootamundra being evacuated from their homes late on Monday night.
Residents who were affected will be able to access assistance by calling Council on 1300 459 689, details will be taken, and appropriate assistance will be arranged.
“Council staff have been working tirelessly since this event, many of our staff were not only doing Council work but are also volunteers with emergency services. Many worked through the night on Monday night, rescuing people, providing assistance at evacuation centres and manning roads, along with those who were taking calls and directing assistance,” CGRC mayor Charlie Sheahan said.
“We have now had time to regroup, assess the situation and put measures in place to extend that assistance, free dumping of flood effected household items has been made available at the Landfill centres, strategically placed skip bins have been installed at sites where the major damage occurred and now Council has put in place a dedicated officer to assist with aid, I ask the public to have some patience and let our staff work on the priorities that need to be assessed and support them in their efforts to get our communities back to normal,” Cr Sheahan said.
The flood assistance coordinator will soon be contacting residents who have been impacted. Residents who need assistance are asked to call Council to register on 1300 459 689.
