Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council (CGRC) advises residents and visitors to Pioneer Park in Cootamundra that the Rural Fire Service (RFS), will be conducting a hazard reduction burn in the area over the weekend of 12 and 14 April 2025. Weather permitting.
Access to Back Brawlin Road from the Olympic Highway end will be restricted on 13 and 14 April to assist with fire appliances and other machinery needed during the exercise. The park will be closed until 17 April to ensure all hot spots within the area are extinguished.
Hazard reduction burns are a controlled exercise to reduce the ground fuel and assist with bush fire risk management.
RFS advise residents in the area to:
- Keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke entering homes
- Keep outdoor furniture under cover to prevent ember burns
- Retract pool covers to prevent ember damage
- Remove washing from clotheslines
- Ensure pets have a protected area
- Vehicles must slow down, keep windows up, turn headlights on
- Sightseers must keep away from burns for their own safety
- If you have asthma or a lung condition, reduce outdoor activities if smoke levels are high and if shortness of breath or coughing develops, take your reliever medicine or seek medical advice
For health information relating to smoke from bush fires and hazard reduction burning, visit the NSW Health website or Asthma Australia.
