Work on the upgrade to Gundagai’s main street, Sheridan Street will continue in three stages.
Contractors for Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council (CGRC), Huon are proposing to complete the works in three stages. Stage one will start at the Homer Street end, stage two will be in the middle and stage three will be the remainder of the works. Huon are currently preparing to mobilise to site to recommence construction and should commence within the next week.
Residents will have noticed that physical construction work hasn’t been visible for some time, however significant work has been undertaken behind the scenes to ensure that work is completed to the highest standard.
Naturally occurring asbestos has been an issue CGRC staff have had to deal with and ensured a plan was in place. Specialist contractors were engaged to safeguard the removal of the asbestos containing material was completed in a way which was safe to the public.
The site is also close to the Telstra phone exchange. Significant underground Telstra assets are present at the site. Through excavation it has been found that some Telstra infrastructure requires repairs. Council and the contractors are currently liaising with Telstra to ensure that the Telstra infrastructure is suitable for new works to be placed over the top. This will ensure that the new work will not be torn up if the Telstra assets were to fail in the short term.
CGRC mayor Cr Gil Kelly said, Council appreciates the disruption to our community and is looking forward to the upgraded street once it is complete.
“This final stage of the Sheridan Street upgrade will ensure that Gundagai’s main street will be a huge enhancement to the work already completed. I do understand that whilst the work on the top end of the street causes interference with everyday business dealings, the team at Council and the contractors are ensuring that all work is completed to the highest standard and is fit for the future,” Cr Kelly added.
Council apologises for any inconvenience caused during the upgrade.
