An Extra-ordinary meeting of Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council (CGRC) held on Tuesday night, to elect a mayor has resulted in Cootamundra Councillor Gil Kelly accepting the position. The vacancy created by the resignation of Councillor Charlie Sheahan, saw one nomination to fill the position.
As the former deputy mayor, Councillor Kelly has been filling in as interim mayor for official duties, since Sheahan’s resignation two weeks ago.
The election of Kelly as mayor, resulted in another election taking place, for the position of deputy mayor. Gundagai Councillor Penny Nicholson was elected unopposed.
Mayor Kelly issued a statement to all CGRC staff early on Wednesday morning, notifying them of his election and new role.
“I am delighted to announce that last night I was elected as the new Mayor of CGRC, and I am extremely honoured to be in the role. Congratulations must also be extended to Councillor Penny Nicholson who was also elected last night to the position of Deputy Mayor. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the outgoing Mayor Sheahan for his dedicated service and hard work over the past three years. His passionate leadership has truly made a positive impact, and I am grateful for all he has done,” Mayor Kelly said in his statement to staff.
All Councillors congratulated Kelly and Nicholson on their appointments and extended their appreciation to Councillor Sheahan for the commitment he bought to the council during his time as mayor.
