Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council Mayor Cr Charlie Sheahan made some tough decisions this week, when asked to judge the children’s NAIDOC Week colouring competition.

The competition saw entries from across the LGA. Entries were received from children aged 2 years to 14 years.

Cr Sheahan said it was a difficult decision to pick winners because all entries were deserving.

“I’m overwhelmed at the number of entries we have received for this competition; NAIDOC Week is a very special time for our indigenous community and our kids have shown their support by taking the time to colour in these pictures and enter them in the competition,” Cr Sheahan said.

The pictures were drawn by local artist Dianne Berkrey, focussing on native turtles and lizards. Prizes included First Nations colouring in book and stickers for the 6 years and under category, whilst the 7 to 10 years and 11 years plus categories received Indigenous notepad and pen sets and stickers.

“As one of my last duties as Mayor, this one has been a delight as well as tough, to pick six overall winners from the huge number received was demanding. I’d like to congratulate all who entered,” Cr Sheahan added.

Winners for the 2024 NAIDOC Week colouring competition are:
Under 6 age category.

  • Savannah Burchell
  • Caleb Waters

7-10 age category.

  • Abbey Obrien
  • McKayley Rainbow

11+age category.

  • Leeroy Bell
  • Lilly Ray

All entries will be on display at Cootamundra and Gundagai Council Chambers during NAIDOC Week, residents can view them at the NAIDOC Week Flag Raising Ceremonies to be held in Cootamundra on Monday 8 July and Gundagai on Friday 12 July.
