Undercover Training Area for Gundagai Pony Club
The Gundagai Pony Club now has an undercover enclosed training area. The huge 61×36 metre structure is almost complete. Completely covered, the steel construction can be used by all horse enthusiasts and will provide a safe environment for riders with varying degrees of experience.
Located at the Gundagai Showground complex, the undercover training area was made possible with a $200,000 grant from the Stronger Country Communities Fund Round Two (SCCFR2) funding. SCCF is an initiative of the NSW State Government and is administered by Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council (CGRC).
The Gundagai Racecourse and Showground facility has become a well recognised as a facility for a wide range of equine disciplines. Community Groups with strong support for this project include the Gundagai Pony Club, Gundagai Horse Trials, Battle on the Bidgee, Gundagai Rodeo Club and The Gundagai Pastoral & Agricultural Society.
The undercover training are has a sand mixture flooring to allow all weather use and will be used for competitions and as a secure training space. The multipurpose structure can be utilised for competitions, clinics, training and other horse enthusiast activities. The club are investigating other uses as well, which could include music festivals, or large show events.
CGRC mayor Cr Abb McAlister said the undercover enclosed training area will benefit the community as a whole.
“We can now attract a wider range of horse associated events with this facility, bringing people from out of town to participate. Increasing visitor numbers increases income to the local businesses and has people spreading the word on the facilities our community offers,” Cr McAlister said.
Cr McAlister added “With Gundagai’s location between Sydney and Melbourne, this piece of improved equine infrastructure will help the town capitalise on its reputation as one of the best Horse Sporting Facilities and thereby help to capture a bigger slice of the fast growing horsemanship market.”
Final drainage works are to be completed soon, with the area in operation towards the end of November.
